ELEVATOR UPGRADE FOR HISTORIC ILLINOIS APARTMENT TOWER

A pair of elevators serving the 11-story Nu-Voh at the Nick apartment tower in Springfield, Illinois, will be upgraded, thanks to city officials approving nearly US$100,000 in tax increment financing (TIF) for the project, The State Journal-Register reports. The Georgian Revival-style structure was originally built as a hotel in 1910. Today, the source says, one elevator does not work, and the other fails to stop on floors eight and 10. The entire upgrade is projected to cost US$360,000, and city councilors said the property owner’s willingness to invest signals it will move forward. Springfield Budget Director Bill McCarty said although the TIF fund has a negative balance, he expects it to be back in the black by this summer. Despite uncertainty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the TIF was approved unanimously.
