ELEVATOR REPLACEMENT AT DEEP PORTLAND TRANSIT STATION

Two sets of elevators serving Portland, Oregon’s Washington Park station, which, at 260 ft, is the deepest transit station in North America, are being replaced by operator TriMet, Mass Transit reports. The elevators are the only way to reach ground level from the platform. Scheduled to start on July 8 and be complete in approximately eight months, the project is part of a larger, US$22-million TriMet project to replace or repair 19 elevators throughout the system (ELENET 733). One set of elevators will remain operational throughout the Washington Park work, allowing the station to remain open. Upgrades are also being performed on the elevators between the platform and plaza levels at Sunset Transit Center.
