DELAYED VT WORK AT BRISBANE STATION SET TO COMMENCE

More than three years after it was delayed, renovation work that includes new vertical transportation (VT) will begin at Brisbane, Australia's busiest rail station, The Age reports. The AUD65-million (US$45.25-million) project, which will also include modifications to several platforms, began in 2016, but was halted for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. In an announcement that came after questions were raised about the lack of progress, Queensland Rail CEO Nick Easy said the project, expected to take three years to complete, would resume in "late 2019." It includes the replacement of escalators connecting the station to the Anzac Square Arcade, elevators to platforms one to four and additional escalators serving platforms three and four. Several of the platforms will be raised to meet accessibility standards. More than 21 million people per year use Central Station, Easy said.
