AMBITIOUS 40-STORY OFFICE TOWER WINS OK IN SYDNEY

The team behind an AUD650-million (US$449-million), 40-story office tower and 1 ha of public space, including along the waterfront in Sydney's Cockle Bay Wharf, received support from an independent planning panel earlier this year, The Urban Developer reports. The creation of public space outweighed residents' and lawmakers' concerns about the tower overshadowing neighbors, creating wind issues and blocking private views, with the panel calling it "a valuable contribution." Two foot overbridges (FOBs) will be demolished and replaced by a deck and publicly accessible open space over the Western Distributor freeway, while a third FOB will be upgraded with new bars, shops and restaurants. The tower was designed by Sydney's Francis-Jones Morehen Pty. Ltd. to the highest environmental standards, and developers are GPT, Brookfield and AMP.
