SOLAR PANELS TO RUN ESCALATORS, CUT COSTS AT INDIAN AGENCY

India’s Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to install solar panels on the roofs of almost all monorail stations that will be used for lighting and running escalators and elevators, the Free Press Journal reports. MMRDA estimates it will save the equivalent of approximately US$45.4 million per year on power bills and, thanks in part to a government subsidy for solar-panel installation, could eventually make money. A private company has been hired to undertake the effort, which will roll out over 24 years.
