REPORT: HOSPITAL KNEW ELEVATOR NEEDED WORK BEFORE MISHAP

Officials at John Peter Smith Hospital (JPS) in Fort Worth, Texas, knew an elevator in which an employee was injured on January 18 needed work since April 2017 when Lerch Bates Inc. examined the vertical-transportation system and recommended a US$690,000 upgrade for the unit in question, various news outlets, including the Houston Chronicle, citing news from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, report. Rather than repairing that elevator, which a hospital spokesperson said was used less often than others, the hospital solicited bids for work on two other elevators. JPS intends to hold the OEM hired to maintain the system responsible for the mishap, and has terminated its contract. The OEM contends JPS using hospital employees to maintain its VT system made problems worse.
