ELEVATOR ACCIDENTS, ONE FATAL, IN THE PHILIPPINES

Two elevator accidents occurred recently in the Philippines, including one on March 2 in which a man opened an unmarked, unlocked door in a mixed-use building in Quezon City thinking it was a public restroom and fell down an elevator shaft from an unspecified height to the basement level and pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital, The Manila Times reports. Another elevator accident happened on February 28, when a unit carrying 17 passengers in a building in Makati fell from the 10th floor to the ground level, according to the Manila Standard. In that incident, at least 14 people suffered minor injuries. The mishap prompted local officials to order inspections of all elevators in Makati and issue a reminder that elevator maintenance is the responsibility of building owners and administrators.
